Moving House Address Change Checklist

When you’re relocating, it’s not just family and friends that need to hear about your big move. Whether you are moving to the next street or a completely different side of the country, there are organisations and companies that need to know about your new address.
To help prevent you from missing any bills or any health appointments, we’ve pulled together a list of all the key steps you need to take to make your home transition that little bit smoother.
Career
- Your employer will need to know your change of address for your payroll as well as just to have your contact details on hand.
- If you are currently receiving money from the government, such as benefits or allowances, you’ll need to change your address on the government website.
Government
- HM Revenue & Customs can update your address for income tax, national insurance, state pension, and tax credits.
- The electoral roll needs your new address for when you come to vote.
- The DVLA should have your current address for your driving licence and vehicle registration. With that, your car insurance provider should be made aware in case of an incident.
- Additionally, you should contact your local council’s tax team to ensure there isn’t a council tax account open beyond the end of your tenancy in your name – as there’s a chance this could negatively impact your credit score if payments are missed by your old home’s new residents.
Finance
- To receive statements and any other information, you should inform your bank or credit card company to send all further correspondence to your new address, otherwise, your old home will receive these sometimes personal letters.
Utilities
Before you move, your current utility companies might benefit from a final reading so that they know how much to charge you on your final bill. This includes:
- Water
- Electricity
- Gas
It is recommended that you inform your utility companies at least 48 hours before moving so that you can avoid any problems on the day you’re moving. By providing your new address to your utility companies, they can send you the final bill there.
Other companies that will need to know about your move are your internet provider and the TV license body. Your TV license won’t be valid when you move to a new house, so you should change this information on the TV Licensing website.
Healthcare
To ensure you receive the best care, it’s important that your healthcare providers have the most up-to-date information for you. You may need to inform your:
- Doctor
- Dentist
- Vet
- Opticians
You should also notify any insurance companies like health, life, or pet insurance.
Recreational
Often forgotten in the chaos of moving, take time to consider which monthly subscriptions you may need to cancel. This could include:
- Gym or exercise groups
- Newspaper or magazine subscriptions
- Clubs or societies
- Recipe boxes
If you think you may miss out on post after you move, you can set up a redirection service through Royal Mail to ensure everything reaches you safely. By redirecting your mail, you won’t miss any important letters and your details won’t be found by the new homeowners.
